The Shire Martial Arts Big Dolphins Program

For 7-10 Year Olds

The Shire Martial Arts Big Dolphin’s program has a 7-10 yr old age specific curriculum.

Unlike the younger Little Dolphins, who have an attendance based curriculum, with their own special belt system, the Shire Martial Arts Big Dolphin’s are actually beginning their journey towards becoming an International Black Belt.

We teach kids about:

  • How to Learn
  • Setting Goals
  • Respect for Self & Others
  • Co-operation
  • Building Self Esteem
  • Resilience
  • Developing Confidence
  • Being Responsible for Yourself

Each month students undergo a ‘Tip Test’, where their skills from our syllabus are assessed.

Here’s how it works:

At the end of class, each student receives a black attendance stripe or tip on their belt, which accumulate over a month. This qualifies them to be assessed for a Tip Test.

Big Dolphins are also required to demonstrate that they have good behaviour and attitude at home and at school.

Once they’ve been given the green light to move forward, the student then moves up to their next coloured belt. Kids and parents alike, see the benefits when their child has tried their best.

Throughout the program, this process is repeated. As they move through the Big Dolphin’s belts and levels, their skill set is increasingly challenged.

Before long, Big Dolphins graduate into our Junior Black Belt Program.

The Big Dolphins Program: Getting Started

Your child’s Shire Martial Arts journey begins with our 3 class Introductory Program, which is a structured 2 week induction that will help you get a good idea about:

  • The logistics of Martial Arts training
  • What it’s like training at Shire Martial Arts
  • What the classes involve
  • If we’re going to be a good fit

Our Intro Program involves your child coming to class twice in the first week and then once in the second week (or the other way around).

This will help you to get a feel for our Martial Arts black belt school and our personal development programs.

Once your child completes the Intro Program, you can then make an informed decision about taking the next step and enrolling them as a Shire Martial Arts student.

What is Personal Development for Kids?
The focus of the Big Dolphins Program is not about sport. It’s about developing confidence, respect and resilience.

We also help 7-10 year olds learn how to deal with stress and anxiety, as well as developing social cues, within the context of learning self defence.

Your child’s personal development begins as soon as you enroll them into our Intro Program.

For example, no matter how excited a child may be at the prospect of trying out Martial Arts, the reality is that it can be quite daunting walking into the training environment for the first time. Therefore, to help your child succeed it’s important to:

1. Watch the Big Dolphins video with them a day or so before they come (see above).

2. After watching the video together ask them;

“I want you to promise me that you’ll do 3 classes”.

“Then, if you have lots of fun, we can talk about getting you a uniform like the other kids. If not, at least you tried it and gave it a go”.

“Will you promise me you’ll do that?”

The Intro Program and young children
As mentioned, our Martial Arts programs are unique because they are based on personal development. This begins with the Intro Program. Please be assured that our friendly team members will see that your child feels included and supported.
